Hydrogen is a key component in energy transition, and, over the following decades, it will become part of everyone’s daily lives. Is there a necessity for innovation, dedicated technologies, new equipment and new standards for hydrogen transportation infrastructure?
Tenaris is contributing to the most ambitious initiatives and development for H2 transportation, which will have direct repercussion in Western Europe countries, like through the European Hydrogen Backbone initiative, which aims at building a dedicated hydrogen transportation infrastructure across Europe. Hubs and newly built “backbone” pipelines will connect facilities that previously would not have had any reasons for being connected (such as steelworks, power stations).
At this year’s digital edition of the Pipeline R&D Session of the Rio Pipeline Conference, which took place from Nov 9 to 11, Philippe Darcis, Tenaris Pipeline Technology Senior Director and Chairman of H2PIPE DNV Joint Industrial Program (JIP) on hydrogen transportation, presented upcoming H2 Backbone initiatives as well as current lines of research and development activities.
"The design of new and the requalification of existing pipelines require substantial multidisciplinary expertise."
Philippe Darcis, Tenaris Pipeline Technology Senior Director and Chairman of H2PIPE DNV Joint Industrial Program (JIP).
“We are addressing R&D activity considering both onshore and offshore hydrogen pipeline projects, where conditions are challenging due to pressure, environmental and functional conditions. The design of new and the requalification of existing pipelines require substantial multidisciplinary expertise. With the H2PIPE JIP, we’re performing a solid assessment of the potential pipeline failure scenarios to develop a guideline for safe and reliable hydrogen transportation”, he said.
Last month Tenaris launched its new material technology for hydrogen applications, THera™. To learn more about this technology, visit this page.
