DNV, the industrial certification body, released in its latest Energy Industrial Survey that hydrogen will become an important, viable and rapidly developing pillar of the energy transition. A widescale hydrogen economy will require new or adapted gas infrastructure, sector coupling with renewables and the electricity grid, and the adoption of hydrogen for a range of industries and applications.
For this reason, DNV launched a Joint Industry Project (JIP) on the Design and Operation of Hydrogen Pipelines, to develop a recommended practice (RP) providing guidance on safe and reliable design, re-qualification, construction and operation of pipelines intended for large scale transportation of hydrogen in order to supplement the requirements given in reference pipeline standards (DNVGL-ST-F101 Submarine pipeline systems).
Philippe Darcis, Tenaris Pipeline Technology Senior Director, the Chairman nominated for the JIP, commented: “Tenaris’s leading role in this international initiative, with its aim to develop recommended practices for offshore pipeline re-qualification and design for hydrogen transportation, is a recognition of the technical capabilities and solid expertise we’ve built over the years in pipeline metullurgy and a further example of our contribution to advancing the energy transition.”
Darcis will chair a group of representatives from 24 international companies, including BP, Equinor, Gassco, Intecsea, Saipem, Severstal, Shell, Subsea7, TechnipFMC, TotalEnergies, Vallourec and Wood Group through a project articulated in different phases.
The first one will be devoted to assess the industry general status focusing on gaps between existing standards and the offshore standard DNVGL-ST-F101, identifying additional considerations that are needed for pipelines operated with hydrogen and capturing them in an industry guideline, and will include preliminary experimental activities.
The following phases will be more experimental and focused on defining the requirements and acceptance criteria for offshore hydrogen pipelines.
