Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS) is an essential part of the global energy transition and Tenaris is developing and enhancing its product portfolio to best serve this growing segment. The process of capturing emissions from both onshore industrial and offshore upstream activities, treating, transporting, and injecting carbon dioxide (CO2) at depths of several kilometers below the water table will require the combination of innovative approaches and existing solutions used in the oil and gas sector for decades.
During the recent CCUS 2022 Conference organized by the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Aberdeen, current CCUS projects, case studies, technical initiatives, operating practices were shared and discussed among energy professionals.
Within the technical panel session dedicated to wells, Massimo Lanna, Tenaris Technical Sales Regional Director for Europe, CIS and Sub-Saharan Africa, presented the results of a testing program consisting of numerical analysis and full-scale tests on gas-tight premium connections with a specific focus on performances in sub-zero environment.
“As there were no set of protocols in the literature to qualify connections for CO2 injection wells, Tenaris worked together with a major operator on developing a testing protocol specific for CCS wells,” explained Lanna. At Tenaris’s R&D full-scale lab in Argentina, TenarisHydril Blue® Dopeless® premium connection in martensitic stainless steel (13 Chrome material) were tested under extreme low temperatures, in order to reproduce the conditions generated when injecting CO2 into depleted reservoirs.
“The testing, performed at -35º Celsius, demonstrated that TenarisHydril® Blue® connection maintain gas sealability even under extra low temperatures, confirming our product portfolio is well equipped to take on the latest challenges associated with CCUS injection wells,” he highlighted.
This challenging low temperature testing represents a milestone for TenarisHydril Blue® Dopeless® in CCUS applications. Tenaris aims at performing further testing replicating the most critical conditions in CCUS wells through collaborating with its main customers.
