Tenaris celebrates 70 years of industrial excellence in Argentina

September 2024 marks the 70th anniversary of the inauguration of Siderca, Tenaris’s seamless steel pipe mill located in Campana, Argentina. More than seven decades later, the production center continues to be a major industrial player in the region.

Back in 1954, this industrial project was focused on meeting local demand. In 1959, the rolling mill’s production capacity was expanded, and three years later, the steelshop started operating, broadening the facility's scope. By the late 1960s, part of the production was destined for international markets. The installation of the direct reduction mill in 1976, along with continuous rolling mills in 1977 and 1988, transformed the facility into an export powerhouse. Today, Tenaris exports 70% of its production to over 50 countries and employs more than 9,300 people in Argentina.

In line with Tenaris’s conviction that an industrial project is only sustainable if it grows alongside the community where it is rooted, a major milestone was reached in 2013 with the opening of the first Roberto Rocca Technical School in Campana. The school has since become a beacon of education in the region. Recognized for transforming the learning environment, it was a finalist for the 2023 World’s Best School Prize by T4 Education, a global organization dedicated to improving education.

Sustainability has always been a major focus at Siderca. Recently, a new Electric Arc Furnace (EAF), equipped with Consteel® technology, has been in installed at the steelshop. With a production capacity of 950,000 tons of liquid steel for seamless pipe manufacturing, the new EAF has replaced one of the two existing units, reducing CO2 emissions, improving energy efficiency, and increasing steel production.

Additionally, the Buena Ventura wind farm is now supplying 103.2 MW of renewable energy to Siderca through an interconnected grid. The project, Tenaris's first wind farm worldwide, consists of 24 turbines generating 509 GWh annually. It provides close to 50% of the electrical energy required by Siderca, reducing CO2 emissions by 152,000 tons per year. A second wind farm is currently underway, and together, the two projects are set to power nearly the entire production center with renewable energy.

“Seven decades later, our industrial center continues to be a major player in the development of Argentina’s industry. Our entrepreneurial spirit remains intact, driving innovation and focusing on the sustainability of our operations through great investment projects, with safety and industrial excellence at the core,” said Javier Martínez Álvarez, Tenaris President for the Southern Cone.
