New electric induction coil reduces carbon footprint at Tenaris mill in Colombia

Tenaris has invested $520,000 USD to install an electric induction coil for the upsetting line, replacing a natural gas fired furnace at TuboCaribe, its seamless steel pipe mill in Cartagena, Colombia.

The upsetting line, which increases the diameter and thickness of pipe ends, processes an average of 24,500 tons of pipes per year. The new equipment shortens the heating time of pipes from five minutes to just 20 seconds, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 2,000 to 3,000 tons per year. Prior to the investment, this line consumed approximately 1.3 million cubic meters of natural gas annually.

“The implementation of this equipment, which eliminates the use of natural gas in our upsetting process, is an example of the energy efficiency actions we are taking across our industrial processes to help achieve Tenaris’s decarbonization objectives,” said Tenaris President for the Andean region, Andrea Bassetti.

Tenaris has established a plan to reduce its CO2 emissions intensity per ton of steel by 30% by 2030, deploying several projects across its global production network. For instance, TuboCaribe also has plans to install solar panels to generate renewable electricity for part of the facility’s energy consumption.

Other initiatives around the world include the recently installed electric arc furnace with Consteel® technology at the Siderca industrial center and two wind farms in Argentina, as well as solar power generation projects in China, Italy, and Romania.
