Tenaris participated in the 2024 Subsea Pipelines & Cables conference, hosted by the Norwegian Petroleum Society (NPS) in Trondheim, Norway, on October 15-16. The event provided a valuable platform for knowledge sharing and networking for the subsea pipeline, risers, umbilicals, and cables community.
Øystein Moholdt, technical sales manager for TenarisShawcor coatings in Norway, presented a paper on testing initiatives of trawl board impacts on insulated pipes, a critical issue for the integrity and performance of subsea pipelines. The tests discussed in the paper were conducted both at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and at Tenaris’s R&D center in Orkanger, Norway.
The insulation material demonstrated significant energy absorption without damaging the steel pipe, offering valuable insights into the durability and resilience of insulated subsea pipelines. “In areas with trawling activity it is important to have a system that can withstand any potential interactions between trawling gear and the pipeline. This has historically been tested with a trawl board impact test, but the positive contribution of the insulation system has rarely been accounted for in the design of the pipeline and protective structures. The testing performed provides valuable data verifying the high energy absorption with our insulation systems adding another benefit of using TenarisShawcor wet insulation,” highlighted Moholdt.
This is the first paper on wet insulation presented by the company since the integration of Shawcor in December 2023, which has strengthened Tenaris’s value proposition for the pipeline market.
