Worldsteel recognizes Tenaris for safety initiative

Tenaris has been recognized by the World Steel Association (worldsteel) for deploying an automatic anti-collision system for forklifts at Dalmine, Tenaris’s seamless pipe mill in Bergamo, Italy. This acknowledgement is part of worldsteel's 2024 Safety and Health Excellence Recognition, which highlights exceptional initiatives in safety and health by international steel manufacturers.

“This year, worldsteel and the judging panel noticed a stronger focus on occupational health and wellbeing. Members are leading the shift to a blame-free, psychologically safe workplace, navigating challenges with vision and innovative approaches. I would like to congratulate and thank the successful companies and all the participants in this program for their outstanding contribution and dedication to this cause,” said worldsteel Director for Sustainable Manufacturing Andrew Purvis.

The initiative, recognized under the occupational safety management category, includes an advanced AI-based computer vision system to enhance safety in the warehouse maneuvering area at Dalmine. The system equips forklifts with four high-resolution cameras that constantly monitor the surroundings. These cameras feed real-time images to a processing unit that takes action when a danger is detected. The AI continuously improves through machine learning, minimizing false alarms and enhancing overall safety.

Since the implementation of this solution, no accidents have been reported in the area, and no cases of non-compliance within a safe distance from maneuvering forklifts have been recorded.

“This recognition from worldsteel shows Tenaris’s commitment to safety and innovation. By leveraging advanced technology, we are setting new standards in workplace safety, ensuring a safer environment for all employees,” said Tenaris Health and Safety Global Senior Director Riccardo Dovera.

This year, Tenaris has been recognized alongside other industry leaders, including Ternium, BlueScope Steel Limited, Gerdau, Liberty, and Tata Steel.
