TenarisHydril TBG1™ connection debuts in Canada

The TenarisHydril TBG1™ connection has successfully completed its first field deployment in Alberta, Canada. With an average running speed of 35 joints per hour, 104 joints were run with zero rejects and no breakouts.

The TBG1™ connection has been designed as an alternative to the API external-upset-end (EUE) tubing connection commonly used for mature fields and heavy oil production.

“TBG1™ is a cost-effective upgrade from the traditional API EUE for operations where no metal-to-metal seal is required. Its robustness during running is one of its key advantages. Additionally, it has been designed to improve running times and address erosion. We are confident that this development will significantly enhance the efficiency of our customers’ operations," says Víctor Vázquez, Technical Sales Regional Director in Canada.

The design of EUE connection leaves a gap between the pins, known as the J area, which is highly susceptible to internal erosion caused by sand and fluid production. The pin-to-pin contact in the TBG1™ connection removes the J area, significantly reducing internal erosion.

With only five threads per inch, compared to eight in API EUE, the make-up process is faster, improving running speed. Additionally, its proprietary thread design withstands multiple makes and breaks, while its non-upset configuration allows for multiple thread re-cuts.

Before field deployment, the connection underwent extensive testing, including finite element analysis (FEA) verifications, full-scale testing, and rig tests at the Rig Direct® Academy, Tenaris’s training and testing center in Veracruz, Mexico, that recreated real-life operational conditions.
