The first of 24 wind turbines that will make up the Buena Ventura wind farm, which Tenaris is building in the Gonzales Chaves district, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, has been completed.
Once operational, the facility will supply close to 50% of the electrical energy required by Tenaris’s plant in Campana, Buenos Aires, which is equivalent to a reduction in CO2 emissions of 152,000 tons per year.
“The assembly of the first wind turbine is a milestone not only for this project, but also for Tenaris at a global level, being the first wind farm for the company, worldwide. It is a great step in our commitment to the energy transition and Tenaris's decarbonization plan by 2030," said Javier Martínez Álvarez, Tenaris president for the Southern Cone.
The assembly of the first wind turbine required a crane with a 150-meter jib and 12-meter width. The remaining 23 wind turbines are expected to be built at a rate of one per week. The development plan contemplates a total installed capacity of 100.8 MW (24 turbines of 4.2 MW each), with a utilization factor of 58% and a total annual electricity production of 509 GWh.
Tenaris is also continuing its work on the medium voltage network that will take the energy from the aeros to the electrical substation, which in turn will link the wind farm with the national interconnected system through the 132 kV line.
Currently, there are about 280 people working on the Gonzales Chaves site. The arrival of the remaining wind turbine equipment will be specified in stages as construction progresses.
The Buena Ventura wind farm is a central component of Tenaris's decarbonization strategy. In February 2021, the company announced its plan to reduce its CO2 emissions intensity per ton of steel by 30% versus 2018 levels by 2030 through the increased use of recycled steel scrap and by achieving greater energy efficiency and investing in renewable energy.
Tenaris's total investment in this project is aproximatedly US$200 million, and the wind farm is projected to be fully operational during the second half of 2023.
