Felix Koshy, Stocker and Visual Inspector at Tenaris’s seamless and welded steel pipe mill in Sault Ste. Marie, Canada, has a keen eye for the minute details in his everyday work handling pipes – but his focus on detail doesn’t end with his shift. Outside of work, Koshy carries that same level of precision in his creative process and artistic abilities.
Koshy’s journey has taken him across different roles and countries. Originally from India, Koshy pursued a degree in mechanical engineering in Chennai, India, followed by a Master of Technology in production and industrial engineering in Kottayam, India.
Joining Tenaris in March 2024, Koshy ensures bundles of pipes are moved throughout the mill with accuracy and efficiency. “My team leader trusts me with these responsibilities because I take my job seriously and I’m detail oriented. There’s a rhythm to the work,” he explains. “It’s all about paying attention and knowing how each pipe moved affects the bigger picture. If I pick up the wrong bundle or move things out of order, it can cause delays, so I have to stay focused.”
These same principles fuel his approach to painting and crafting, where every brush stroke and material choice is intentional. “Ever since I was a child, I’ve loved drawing,” Koshy said. “I started with sketches of buildings and people, and then I moved onto crafts.” His art spans a wide range, from watercolour or acrylic painting to sculptures made from objects he finds in nature or purchases from secondhand shops.
Koshy’s artistic and technical skills came together when he crafted a model crane inspired by one in the mill. The idea took shape after his supervisor, Rene Gonzalez, Internal Transportation Shift Leader, saw the Facebook page he uses to share his artwork and left a comment on one of the posts, asking him to draw a bundle of pipes.
Taking the request one step further, Koshy built a miniature crane using an old steel pen stand, repurposing its small tubes as pipes and incorporating canvas and thread for added detail. “I work best with live references, so it was fun to use my love for art to complete a model of a piece of equipment I see at work each day.”
The model crane is kept on display in the Internal Transportation office inside the mill for Koshy’s colleagues to see. “Art is my passion, and I am glad to share it with the people I work with,” he said proudly.
